The Union for Gender Empowerment (UGE) and the Sexual Assault Centre of McGill Students’ Society (SACOMSS) will be hosting “Empowering Voices: A Forum on Sexual Assault for Survivors and Their Allies” on Thursday November 28th at 3:30 p.m. This event is open to the wider Montreal community. Location: SSMU Clubs Lounge, 4th Floor, 3480 rue McTavish. This event hopes to provide a safer space for speaking openly about sexual assault where the voices of survivors, and their allies, can be heard. It will be facilitated with several speakers and an open mic portion. Speeches do not need to be prepared beforehand but if you know in advance that you would like to speak please send an email to: empoweringvoicesforum@gmail.com

*Trigger Warning*: This event will contain the discussion of sexual assault, violence, and rape culture. We want to emphasize that the content of speeches is up to the discretion of the speaker and may include specific disclosures or accounts that could be very triggering and difficult for audience members to hear. If you are feeling like you need to excuse yourself, please feel welcome to, but try to be polite to the speaker in doing so. This is very difficult subject matter and we all need to take care of ourselves.
*There will be trained active listener’s present in the audience to provide support.*

Guidelines: We ask that speakers keep their pieces relatively short so that a multitude of voices can be heard.
We encourage the sharing of personal stories but ask that speakers try to avoid making sweeping generalizations from personal experience.
We hope that we can work together to create a compassionate and respectful space in which experiences can be shared and therefore want to remind people to try to use survivor oriented language when possible and to refrain from victim blaming.

We are hoping to have refreshments provided by Midnight Kitchen!
If you have any questions, concerns, or would like more information about this event please send us an email at

This space is wheelchair accessible.
