The UGE is hiring!

The Union for Gender Empowerment is a service of the Student Society of McGill University (SSMU). We coordinate an alternative lending library and zine distro, and a co-op stocking at-cost ecologically-responsible menstrual products, DIY sex toys, safer sex supplies, and gender empowerment items.

 

We are looking to fill three to four positions for this summer. These positions are open to all. Only applicants accepted for an interview will be contacted. All applications are due by Friday, April 27th. To apply, please send a CV and cover letter to ugehiring@gmail.com.

 

1. Summer staff/outreach person: $2500 over four months (10-12 hours/week)

 

Responsibilities:

–       maintaining and organizing the space

–       communicating with collective and volunteers

–       maintaining the email, Facebook accounts, and blog

–       outreach to new volunteers and collective members

–       workshop facilitation

–       various other tasks associated with the upkeep of the space

 

Desired Skills/Assets

–       strong organization skills and self-motivation

–       experience in workshop facilitation

–       experience working with student groups

–       knowledge of gender and anti-oppression politics

 

2. Co-op Coordinator: $750 (45-50 hours over the whole summer)

 

Responsibilities

–       create new organization system for co-op

–       make an inventory of the co-op

–       re-evaluate co-op inventory and suggest changes

–       order new items for the co-op

–       create a guide for co-op use for collective members and volunteers

 

Desired Skills/Assets

–       strong organization skills and self-motivation

–       experience working with student groups

–       knowledge of gender and anti-oppression politics

–       knowledge of gender empowerment items, alternative menstrual products, and safer sex products

 

3. Discretionary Fund Coordinator: $500 (35-40 hours over the whole summer)

 

Responsibilities

–       research discretionary fund policies of other groups

–       create a discretionary fund policy for the UGE

–       publicize new discretionary fund (via posters, callouts, online updates, etc.)

–       communicate with SSMU to budget for discretionary fund

 

Desired Skills/Assets

–       strong organization skills and self-motivation

–       experience working with student groups

–       knowledge of gender and anti-oppression politics

–       experience working with budgets

 

4. Suggested Project: $1500 (approximately 100 hours over the whole summer)

 

We would like to support projects that are related to our mandate. One way of doing this is to offer a summer stipend to folks who have a desire to do or create something related to gender empowerment in Montreal. Previously stipends have focused on improving the UGE space and services. This is great, but we are also enthusiastic about projects beyond McGill.

 

Past examples include:

–       designing workshops

–       updating and cataloging the UGE library

–       updating the UGE referral guide
